The Pittsburgh Penguins further trimmed their training camp roster Sunday, jettisoning five players to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and waiving defenseman Caleb Jones for the purpose of sending him to WBS, too.
It’s been a quiet camp for Jones, 29, who was obviously down the Penguins’ depth chart after a troubled 2025-26 season, which started well as he claimed a top-six spot on the Penguins’ blue line, but was marred by serious injuries, a mid-season setback, and then a suspension for a performance-enhancing substance. Overall, a promising season yielded just seven games.
The other Penguins sent to WBS do not need to pass through waivers. The list includes 2022 first-round pick Owen Pickering, defensemen Jake Livanavage and Chase Pietila, forward Rafael Harvey-Pinard, and goalie Cam Johnson, who was absent from most of camp for personal reasons.
Pickering, 22, played four NHL games last season, but drew acclaim from the organization for his work in the second half of the AHL season and his growth during the AHL playoffs, including his attempt to play through a broken foot.
