The St. Louis Blues made a series of moves on Sunday afternoon. Defenseman Adam Jiricek was recalled from the American Hockey League (AHL). Defenseman Justin Barron was claimed off of waivers from the Nashville Predators. Lastly, defenseman Calle Rosen was placed on waivers.
All this seems to be in response to an injury Logan Mailloux sustained in Saturday’s preseason finale. General manager (GM) Alexander Steen will address the media on Monday morning.

Mailloux’s Injury
Mailloux sustained an upper-body injury in the first period of Saturday’s 3-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. Mailloux stepped in to defend teammate Philip Broberg, who was clipped by Cole Smith. Mailloux was given a fighting major and a ten-minute misconduct. However, at the start of the second period, the Blues announced the defenseman would not return.

At this time, it is unclear the extent of the injury is for the Ontario native. This could be what Steen talks about in Monday’s press conference. If Mailloux misses significant time, it would be a disappointing start to a season in which Mailloux was looking to take on a top role on defense.
Jiricek Makes the Team
Jiricek played well enough in the preseason to make the team. However, the team rightly sent him down, as meaningful minutes in the AHL would do more for his development than just being a depth option at the NHL level.

However, Mailloux’s injury certainly creates an opportunity for Jiricek to play full time. It is unclear if he still slots on the team’s first pair or if he will play on the second. Considering fellow youngster Theo Lindstein will play on the second pair, head coach Jim Montgomery may look to pair the youth with veteran players.
Barron Adds Right-Handed Depth
Barron will provide an additional right-handed option for the Blues. It is unclear at this time if he will be on the roster as a depth player or if he will start the season in Springfield. That is more news that may come on Monday.
Still to Come
This picture will become clearer after Steen addresses the media. For now, we can only speculate, but it would seem the Blues are being bitten by the injury bug already.
