Want to buy a piece of the New York Rangers? Beginning Oct. 26, you can do just that.
MSG Sports will spin off the Rangers and the NBA champion New York Knicks into separate publicly traded companies after its board approved the move Wednesday. The deal is scheduled to be completed on Oct. 26.
MSG Sports will be renamed as MSG Knickerbockers Corp. It will own the Knicks and the Westchester Knicks of the NBA G-League. MSG Rangers Corp. will include the Rangers, the MSG training facility in Tarrytown, New York, and the Hartford Wolf Pack, the Rangers’ farm team in the American Hockey League.

The transaction will be final after league approvals and other conditions. James Dolan will serve as Executive Chairman and CEO of MSG Rangers and as well as remaining Executive Chairman and CEO of MSG Knicks.
“With our board’s approval we are now one step closer to our goal of separating our Knicks and Rangers businesses into two distinct public companies,” Dolan said. “Both teams have storied histories and large and passionate fan bases, and we believe each company will be well-positioned to generate long-term value for shareholders.”
On July 3, Dolan handed over day-to-day ownership responsibilities for the Rangers to his son Quentin, who was named president, chief operating officer and alternate governor. It’s the first time since assuming control of the Rangers and Knicks 27 years ago that the elder Dolan scaled back his involvement with one of his teams.
The Rangers said the younger Dolan will “assume a key role in the day-to-day ownership responsibilities of the Rangers and the AHL Wolf Pack.” President and general manager Chris Drury reports to Quentin Dolan; the team said he will “continue to manage the hockey operations of the organization and lead all hockey decision making.”
The younger Dolan said after being promoted that he was looking forward to the challenge of running one of the NHL’s Original Six teams.
“I’ve always had a tremendous respect and admiration for the New York Rangers organization, it’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember,” he said. “I’m honored to have this opportunity to ensure our hockey operations staff, coaches, and players have all the support they need to provide our fans a product they can be proud of. I’m looking forward to immediately getting to work with Chris Drury, (coach) Mike Sullivan, and the entire staff.”
MSG Sports splitting Rangers, Knicks into separate companies
MSG Sports shareholders of record as of Oct. 20 will receive one share of MSG Rangers stock for every two shares of MSG Sports they own. The company said the transaction is intended to be a tax-free distribution for shareholders.
The new companies will trade on the New York Stock Exchange. The Rangers will have the symbol MSGR; the Knicks will trade under MSGK.
Dolan split the Knicks and Rangers from Madison Square Garden, long billed as “The World’s Most Famous Arena,” in a 2020 spin-off that put the venue and teams into two different publicly traded companies. Five years ago, the Knicks signed a 35-year lease to play at MSG.

The Knicks and Rangers are among the few franchises to be part of a publicly traded company. MSG Sports reported $1.153 billion in revenue and $59 million in profits for the fiscal year ending June 30.
The Knicks’ run to their third NBA championship and first since 1973 was good for business; the franchise pulled in an extra $66.9 million in playoff revenue compared to the year prior despite playing nine games at MSG during each postseason.
The Rangers, on the other hand, are coming off back-to-back non-playoff seasons. They’ve won the Stanley Cup four times since entering the NHL in 1926, but just once (1994) in the past 86 years. The Blueshirts began 2026-27 with a 3-0 loss to the Boston Bruins and play their home opener against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night.
