We know the Boston Bruins will have to make moves once Matt Poitras is healthy, but that’s not the only move they are trying to make.
The Bruins are reportedly looking for a trade partner to take on Henri Jokiharju. He was the last player waived from the training camp roster and has been assigned to the Providence Bruins. His contract is currently buried with the Bruins taking on a $1.775M cap hit, but they are looking for someone to take on the remaining two years at $3M per.
Teams also have their eyes on the Poitras situation, waiting to see if the Bruins will place him on waivers.
Elsewhere around the league, the Vegas Golden Knights extended an original misfit yesterday. Nathan MacKinnon dropped the gloves with a young Kings defenseman. Simon Edvinsson returned home while he waits for a new contract. Brad Marchand is back on the ice, the Avalanche extended their coach, and the Blue Jackets are opting for five alternate captains.
Arizona State also placed their head coach on leave.
Happy October, catch up on Bruins and league news in today’s Daily Bean:
Boston Bruins
JOKIHARJU: The Bruins are looking to find Henri Jokiharju a new home. The 27-year-old right-shot defenseman cleared waivers, meaning none of the other 31 teams wanted to take him on, which makes the Bruins’ search a little more difficult. Jokiharju played in 41 of the Bruins’ 82 games last season with 15 points (2-13–15).
Teams are also monitoring the Matt Poitras situation, and Elliotte Friedman does not think he’s getting through waivers.
NEXT UP: The Bruins are practicing today at 11:00 AM before heading to Winnipeg. The practice is free and open to the public.
NHL News & National Hockey Now
Sportsnet: The Vegas Golden Knights signed William Karlsson to a two-year extension yesterday. The deal begins in the 2027-28 season and carries a $6.75M cap hit. Karlsson is one of three players who have been with the Golden Knights for all 10 years of their existence.
B/R Open Ice (video via 𝕏): Nathan MacKinnon fought Brandt Clarke last night. The two got into it before MacKinnon dropped the gloves. It’s the second fight of MacKinnon’s career.
Detroit Hockey Now: Simon Edvinsson is back in Sweden. The 6-foot-6 defenseman is practicing with Frölunda HC while he awaits a new contract with the Red Wings. Kevin Allen has more on the situation, including what both sides are looking for in the contract.
The Columbus Dispatch: Columbus is opting for a big leadership group. Instead of naming a captain, Zach Werenski will wear an ‘A.’ Mathieu Olivier and Charlie Coyle will wear the ‘A’ at home in October, while Cole Sillinger and Sean Monahan will wear them on the road.
No leadership group will be as big as Minnesota State’s, though.
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Touchdown, Pittsburgh! No, not the Steelers, but the Penguins. The Penguins scored seven last night in a rout of the Philadelphia Flyers. Dan Kingerski has grades from the beatdown of the Penguins’ in-state rival.
Colorado Hockey Now: The Avalanche signed Jared Bednar to a four-year contract extension. Bednar, the longest-tenured head coach in Avalanche history, was in the last year of his current deal. He has been with the team for 10 years and is now signed through the 2030-31 season.
Florida Hockey Now: Brad Marchand is back on the ice. The former captain underwent surgery in August, missed Zee’s Final Shift, and was expected to miss the entire month of October. That timeline may have changed, though, as Paul Maurice said he is “probably further ahead” than originally expected.
New Jersey Hockey Now: James Nichols and Daniel Amoia teamed up for six bold Devils predictions and looked at what could stop them.
The Athletic: Arizona State placed men’s hockey coach Greg Powers on paid leave. The move comes two days after seven players asked ASU’s president to remove the coach pending further investigation into the workout that left Matthew Mayich on life support. Assistant coach Mike Corbett will coach ASU in their first two games this weekend while the university searches for an interim head coach.
