It was reported today that former Stanley Cup winner and Washington Capitals veteran TJ Oshie was retiring from the NHL. Multiple injuries have caught up to the forward and have been plaguing him up until the 2024-2025 season. Now the New York Rangers will have once less rival to fight with.

The Washington Capitals won their only Stanley Cup in 2018, with T.J. Oshie as a member of the team.

The win was exhilarating as they defeated the “misfits” era Vegas Golden Knights, who have been a powerhouse in the league since.

For Oshie, it was a storybook moment in his career, and one that will last in his memories. It was announced today by the NHLPA that T.J. Oshie will be retiring from the NHL.

«After 17 unforgettable years in the NHL, I’ve decided to retire,» said T.J. Oshie. «I would like to thank the Washington Capitals and the St. Louis Blues for giving me the opportunity to play the game I love, all of my teammates who battled with me every night, my coaches who challenged me to be better every day, and the athletic trainers and equipment staff who got me ready to play. I also want to thank the fans your energy and passion made every game memorable, and it was an honour to play in front of you.»

Oshie played 1,010 career NHL games split between the St. Louis Blues and Washington Capitals. Oshie would tally a total of 695 points (302-393) in that time frame.

He was originally selected 24th overall in the 1st-round of the 2005 NHL Draft.

Together, both he and Alex Ovechkin were key factors in the Capitals’ Stanley Cup victory in 2018. His playoff totals were impressive as well, playing 106 playoff games and scoring 69 points (34-35).

Oshie has seen success with the Capitals as part of the leadership group all nine years in Washington, while being sent to an All-Star Game in 2020, and nominated for the Bill Masterton Trophy in 2024.

The Capitals lose a significant piece in the lineup in Oshie, and with Spencer Carberry, may not have an issue rebounding from the loss.

But for some fans, this loss is heartbreaking.

Congratulations on your retirement, TJ Oshie.
