The New York Rangers retool gains traction, as it was reported today that GM Chris Drury has placed defenseman Carson Soucy on the trade block. He’ll join K’Andre Miller and other potential Rangers veterans who could be moved as soon as July.

According to James Mirtle of The Athletic, GM Chris Drury isn’t afraid of a major shakeup, including recent acquisitions.

The latest to join the Rangers’ trade discussions is defenseman Carson Soucy, who might be a sneaky addition for a team that needs a decent shutdown defenseman.

At the moment, Soucy makes $3.25 million AAV and is in the last year of his contract he signed with the Vancouver Canucks on July 1st, 2023.

He’s been a decent addition by the New York Rangers, but not good enough to remain in a Blueshirt, it seems.

In 59 games split between the Canucks, Soucy scored only 10 points (3-7) and wasn’t seen in the Rangers last game, on 4/17 against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Soucy might be a great rental for a contending team as a depth option. But for Drury, addition by subtraction might be the best option if a player isn’t a fit for the Rangers’ future goals.

Saving $3.25 million on the cap could mean more bottom-six forwards, more prospect signings, or an RFA signing or two.

So trading Soucy would have a purpose for the Rangers, in addition to whatever assets they can acquire for him, whether it be prospects or draft picks.

Soucy originally waived his no-trade clause to come to New York and play in Madison Square Garden. However, it looks as if his time has run out already.
