Surprising Details of Failed 3-Way Trade Involving Leafs’ Mitch Marner Emerge

In trying to trade Mitch Marner at the trade deadline, the Maple Leafs reportedly had more than just a one-for-one deal with the Carolina Hurricanes on the table.Reports indicated that the deal was one-for-one, sending Mikko Rantanen to the Leafs in exchange for Marner.In his draft combine recap, The Athletic’s James Mirtle noted that the Leafs were exploring a trade that involved both the Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights – a team that has been focused on acquiring Marner since last summer.
Was Mitch Marner Actually Willing to Waive His No-Movement Clause?
In his piece, Mirtle, citing league sources, shared that the deal would have sent Marner to the Knights and Rantanen to the Leafs.
“There were also discussions around a Marner-to-Vegas transaction before the trade deadline this year, a move that would have involved the Hurricanes in a three-way deal,” wrote Mirtle. “Theoretically, the Leafs would have received Mikko Rantanen while the Golden Knights got Marner and sent something to Carolina.”
In sharing news of the 3-way deal, Mirtle also noted that it was the inability of the Golden Knights and Hurricanes to find the right assets to include to get the deal across the finish line that prevented it from going through.
It isn’t known if Marner was asked to waive his no-movement clause for the reported 3-way trade in specific, but it appears there was nothing on the Leafs’ end that caused the deal to fall apart, reported Mirtle.
