After practices and games, players from the Florida Eels junior hockey program take part in hockey yoga to strengthen their mind-muscle connection while also preventing injuries.

Hockey can be such a physically demanding sport, with every pivot, push, and pass coming with the price of pain.

Thankfully, the Florida Eels’ Junior Hockey program has found the perfect remedy: hockey yoga with the “Yoga Mama.”

Yoga instructor Tara Mina said, “For the last four years I’ve done Hockey Yoga, customizing the practice for hockey players. They have a very hard game to play, so I think if we can work with what they need throughout the season, I feel that’s the benefit.”

After every practice or game, Tara leads the Junior Eels in hockey yoga: a 45-minute routine that heals all who take part.

Florida Eels junior hockey player Leandre Masson said, “I feel like it’s good for your mental health, decreases stress, it helps with muscle pain, soreness, and energy. Once I’m done with yoga, I feel relaxed.”

The yoga seems to be working! Tara says that the program has helped prevent injuries, ultimately benefiting the players as they chase their hockey dreams.

Tara Mina said, “The best part, I think, is seeing them come together as a team and really bring that brotherhood and community. It’s a gift and it’s my honor; it’s not a job, but it’s a privilege.”

Florida Eels junior hockey player Paxton Campbell said, “I enjoy being able to just pass out. She works us down slowly with her music and speaking calmly and then just being able to sleep and meditate.”

With the help of their Yoga Mama, the Eels will continue to namaste on track for success in their hockey journeys.
