The Tampa Bay Lightning return home Monday night looking to build momentum against the Philadelphia Flyers. Tampa Bay hosts Philadelphia on October 5 at Benchmark International Arena. Puck drop comes at 7 p.m. ET. The Lightning enter the matchup with a 1-1-0 record. Meanwhile, Philadelphia comes to Tampa still searching for its first victory at 0-1-2. Tampa Bay opened its season with a disappointing 5-1 loss against the New York Rangers. However, the Lightning responded strongly during Saturday’s home opener. Tampa Bay defeated the Washington Capitals 3-1 behind a much stronger overall performance. Charle-Edouard D’Astous and Conor Geekie scored during a dominant opening period.

The Lightning outshot Washington 14-5 during that opening period. They also held a 25-12 advantage in shot attempts. Tampa Bay won 12 of 14 first-period faceoffs. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 19 saves and protected Tampa Bay’s lead. Jake Guentzel later finished the victory with an empty-net goal. That effort looked much more like the Lightning team fans expected entering the season. However, Tampa Bay still has one major issue to solve. The Lightning have started the season 0-for-10 on the power play. Their talented units have created opportunities without finishing them. Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point, Brandon Hagel, and Guentzel give Tampa Bay plenty of offensive firepower. Therefore, Philadelphia cannot afford unnecessary penalties Monday night.

The Flyers already understand that problem. Philadelphia suffered a 7-0 loss against Pittsburgh during its season opener. However, Rick Tocchet’s club responded with consecutive 3-2 overtime losses. The Flyers earned points against New Jersey and Carolina despite failing to secure a victory. Philadelphia nearly changed that Saturday against the Hurricanes. Owen Tippett scored Philadelphia’s first goal before Matvei Michkov gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead. Travis Konecny assisted on Michkov’s second-period goal. However, Carolina eventually forced overtime before Shayne Gostisbehere scored the winner. Joseph Woll made 37 saves for Philadelphia during the 3-2 defeat. The Flyers struggled to generate sustained pressure after Michkov’s goal. Philadelphia produced only two shots over the final 35:31.

That trend could become dangerous against Tampa Bay. The Lightning showed Saturday that they can control possession when their effort matches their skill. Tampa Bay also blocked 19 shots and outhit Washington 30-24. Recent history favors Tampa Bay Recent meetings between these clubs heavily favor the Lightning. Tampa Bay swept all three games against Philadelphia during the 2025-26 regular season. The Lightning outscored the Flyers 15-3 across those three meetings. Their first meeting came November 24 in Tampa. Vasilevskiy stopped all 20 Philadelphia shots during a 3-0 Lightning victory. Hagel scored twice and added an assist. Kucherov assisted on all three Tampa Bay goals. Anthony Cirelli also recorded a goal and an assist. Things became even uglier for Philadelphia during January.

Tampa Bay crushed the Flyers 7-2 on January 10 in Philadelphia. Kucherov scored twice and finished with four points. Gage Goncalves also scored twice. Point contributed three assists, while Vasilevskiy stopped 18 shots. Two nights later, Tampa Bay completed the season sweep with a 5-1 victory. Pontus Holmberg scored only 70 seconds into that contest. Guentzel, Point, Hagel, and Kucherov also scored for Tampa Bay. The Lightning clearly controlled last season’s series. However, Philadelphia has enough offensive talent to make Monday’s meeting different. Michkov remains one of Philadelphia’s most dangerous offensive weapons. Tippett can create scoring opportunities with his shot and speed. Konecny also brings skill, energy, and physicality.

Still, Philadelphia needs more consistent offensive pressure. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay needs Kucherov, Point, Hagel, and Guentzel to keep generating chances. The Lightning would also love their power play to finally break through. Another important storyline surrounds Philadelphia defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen. Ristolainen left Saturday’s game against Carolina after one third-period shift. Tocchet said the Flyers would evaluate his undisclosed injury Sunday. His potential absence could challenge Philadelphia’s defensive depth against Tampa Bay’s skilled forwards. Tampa Bay also enters the game without a completely healthy roster. Yanni Gourde and Dominic James started the season unavailable because of injuries.

Still, Tampa Bay has enough depth to create problems throughout its lineup. Monday’s game gives the Lightning another opportunity to establish their identity early this season. Tampa Bay showed that identity against Washington with aggressive forechecking and stronger puck battles. The Lightning also defended their net much better. Philadelphia should enter desperate after dropping its first three games. That desperation could create an entertaining early-season matchup in Tampa. The Flyers want their first victory. Meanwhile, the Lightning want consecutive wins after their ugly season-opening defeat. Recent history strongly favors Tampa Bay. Now the Lightning must prove that last season’s dominance can carry into another year. I can also make this more sports-media style with a punchier opening and stronger Lightning-focused angle if you want.
