NEW YORK — New York Islanders winger Simon Holmstrom suffered an undisclosed facial injury late in the first period of Tuesday night’s rivalry clash with the Rangers.

While forechecking on the right boards in the latter stages of an Islanders power play, Holmstrom took a clear attempt from Sean Durzi directly in the face. He went down in a heap, while teammates Victor Eklund and Brayden Schenn immediately and feverishly waved for the training staff to get out to him.

He skated off to the locker room moments later with a towel over his face. He ultimately returned to the bench shortly after the start of the second period.

Now in his fifth NHL season, Holmstrom had a goal and an assist in New York’s first two games of the 2026-27 season. He scored 39 goals across his previous two seasons.
