Connor McMichael scored his first goal as a Blue and added an assist, but it was sweeter homecoming for Blackhawks legend Patrick Kane as Chicago defeated St Louis 4-2 on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at United Center.
Kane made his home season debut after signing a two-year contract, returning to the team he had played for 16 seasons and led to three Stanley Cup titles. Kane registered two shots that were saved by Joel Hofer, but Sam Rinzel and Anton Frondell were able to slide shots past him in the second period to give the Blackhawks a 2-1 lead. The last two minutes saw the Blackhawks claim two empty-net goals, including one by Cole Smith when the Blues were on the power play. McMichael’s goal came later in the power play with 40 seconds remaining in the contest. Mason McTavish had opened the scoring for St Louis with 4:30 left in the first.
Spencer Knight recorded 26 saves to secure the Blackhawks’ first win of the season. The Blues remain on two points in the early season, and will prepare for their home opener Thursday night against San Jose. Puck drop at Enterprise Center is at 7 p.m.
