In a year filled with upheaval in the Red Sox rotation, Sonny Gray provided something Boston craved: consistency.

Some had questions about how much the 36-year-old had to offer after posting a below-league-average ERA with the Cardinals in 2025. Gray silenced his doubters with a glistening campaign in Boston colors in 2026.

Although there are still questions about his future in Beantown — especially after some comments he made during the postseason — there is little doubt that Gray could be a useful player for Boston going forward should he stick around.

With that, here’s a look back at Gray’s performance during the 2026 season.

Red Sox Year in Review 2026: Sonny Gray

The Red Sox fell short of their stated aims in 2026, finishing with fewer wins than last year and crashing out in the AL Wild Card at the hands of hated rivals the Yankees.

Gray can hardly be blamed for their toils. The aging wonder turned back the clock with one of the best seasons of his career. The three-time All-Star recorded his lowest-ever ERA since becoming a full-time starter. He also led the major leagues in wins.

After seeing his fastball lose some of its venom in 2025, Gray turned things around in a major way. After seeing his fastball grade as below average in terms of run value in 2024 and 2025, Gray’s fastball returned to the perch of elite in his maiden year with in Beantown — his heater ranked in the 90th percentile, according to Baseball Savant.

All that resulted in Gray enjoying one of the best seasons of his big-league career. He wasn’t quite able to reproduce some of the volume that he enjoyed in his early career. But as Boston’s workhorse, he performed admirably, leading the team in innings pitched by a comfortable margin.

Sonny Gray’s Most Memorable Moment

Gray eclipsed the 10-strikeout mark on just one occasion in 2026, whiffing 11 in a 5-2 over the Rockies on June 23. And yet, his best performance arguably came in a game that he didn’t get a result in.

Gray stifled New York’s bats on June 28, taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning. He finished the day with a final line of nine strikeouts, one hit surrendered and one walk conceded in 7.1 innings.

The Yankees turned things around upon Gray’s exit, taking the lead after a four-run rally in the ninth and tenth innings.

But Boston had the last laugh in the bottom of the 10th, with Jarren Duren’s two-run single at the death giving the Red Sox a momentous walk-off win.

Gray authored up one of the best seasons of his career in 2026. He didn’t quite have the volume to match his most impactful campaigns in terms of bWAR and fWAR. But his per-game impact shined.

Gray used a different approach to impress from the mound this season, spurning his strikeout-heavy style of play for a less contact-averse outlook. His whiff percentage and K rate dropped precipitously compared to his 2025 marks, while his barrel rate and ground-ball percentage increased.

Nevertheless, Gray’s change of heart worked a charm, allowing him to post the fourth-highest bWAR total over his career.
