San Jose Sharks News & Notes
San Jose named Macklin Celebrini its captain on Sept. 25, with former captain Joe Thornton presenting the C. The 2026-27 opening stretch has already complicated that debut. Celebrini was a late scratch with a lower-body injury before a 5-0 loss to Dallas and has since been listed as day-to-day, missing a subsequent practice. The club has not set a return timeline for the forward, who signed a five-year extension over the summer.
The goaltending picture remains a talking point. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported in late September that San Jose and Winnipeg had discussed a Connor Hellebuyck trade, with Friedman calling the Sharks “very high up on that list,” though it was unclear who initiated contact. Hellebuyck carries an $8.5 million cap hit through 2031 and full trade protection. San Jose also placed goaltender Eric Comrie and forward Jimmy Huntington on waivers for assignment to AHL San Jose.
St. Louis Blues News & Notes
Injuries have shaped the Blues’ early roster. Defenseman Tyler Tucker was ruled week-to-week and sought a second opinion on his knee, while Logan Mailloux underwent surgery on a broken hand sustained in a preseason fight with Chicago’s Cole Smith and is out at least eight weeks before re-evaluation. Both opened the season on injured reserve. Forward Alexey Toropchenko left the opener in Dallas after being checked along the boards and needing help off the ice, and the league listed him out at least six weeks.
St. Louis responded to the blue-line losses by recalling Adam Jiricek, who made the opening-night roster and drew power-play work, and by claiming defenseman Justin Barron off waivers from Nashville. Jim Montgomery declined to reveal his pairings but pointed to the group’s depth. The Blues went 1-3-0 in the preseason and opened with three straight road games before returning home on October 8 against San Jose. Mason McTavish, acquired in the offseason, scored the team’s first goal in Dallas.

Players To Watch
Will Smith — San Jose Sharks
With Macklin Celebrini day-to-day, Smith carries more of the Sharks’ offensive load. Box Score Junkie has him at 57.6 shot attempts for per 60 this season to date in 2026-27, with two goals on just 0.8 expected — a plus-1.2 finishing edge. His 49.5 percent Corsi-for is middling, but the shot volume keeps an anytime-scorer ticket live.
Jimmy Snuggerud — St. Louis Blues
Snuggerud is the Blues’ best territorial driver by Box Score Junkie’s 2026-27 numbers: 58.2 percent Corsi-for, 64.8 shot attempts for per 60 and 1.2 high-danger expected goals generated with him on the ice. He put three shots on net last time out in 18:58. A sensible shots-on-goal prop target.
