Carolina Hurricanes News & Notes
Carolina opened its title defense in Florida on Sept. 29, watching the Panthers raise no banner of their own while the Hurricanes’ Stanley Cup was honored. The game turned into a tight, defensive affair decided in overtime by Gustav Forsling, with Florida holding a 20-15 shot advantage. Penalties piled up in the second period, with Svechnikov, Aho, Blake, and Walker all taking minors, and both teams worked through 5-on-3 situations. Carolina got its first win Oct. 3, Shayne Gostisbehere scoring in overtime against Philadelphia.
Seth Jarvis has shed his no-contact sweater as he works back from shoulder surgery, practicing with the team as his recovery progresses. The roster question that lingers is defenseman Alexander Nikishin, who requested a trade following the Hurricanes’ 2026 championship and has reportedly drawn interest from St. Louis. Carolina has also been among the most aggressive clubs pursuing Winnipeg goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who requested a trade of his own and carries a full no-movement clause on a deal running through 2031.
Chicago Blackhawks News & Notes
The injury list has shaped Chicago’s early-season lineup. Andrew Mangiapane is out week-to-week with a lower-body injury, and Teuvo Teräväinen left with an apparent ankle injury that forced a shake-up among the forward groups. Connor Bedard has been working his way back and has taken part in three non-contact practices. The club also recalled forward Dominic Toninato from AHL Rockford, one of several roster moves announced by the organization this week.
A familiar name resurfaced elsewhere this week. Goaltender Collin Delia, who dressed for Chicago and Vancouver across 52 NHL games with a 19-18-7 record, 3.51 goals-against average and .857 save percentage, signed with the ECHL’s Norfolk Admirals for 2026-27. Delia spent much of his career in Rockford, where he became the first goaltender in IceHogs history to score a goal, on Dec. 17, 2021. He was an AHL All-Star in 2019 and played eight games in Sweden last season.

Players To Watch
Logan Stankoven — Carolina Hurricanes
Stankoven filled the net last time out, a three-goal game on five shots in just 15:08 of ice time. That’s a tidy shot-to-goal return that won’t repeat nightly, but the volume was there, and the deployment is manageable. If he keeps drawing five looks a night, the anytime-scorer market is worth a glance.
Bowen Byram — Chicago Blackhawks
Byram logged a team-high 26:35 last game with two shots and no points, and with Chicago’s forward group thinned out, he’ll be leaned on again. Box Score Junkie has him at 49.7% Corsi-for this season to date, with a 44.8% Fenwick over 98 minutes — heavy usage, but the play isn’t tilting his way yet.
