Utah Mammoth News & Notes

Utah reshaped its lineup over the summer, acquiring center Vincent Trocheck from the New York Rangers in a deal that sent defenseman Sean Durzi, a prospect, and a draft pick to New York. The club announced its 23-man opening night roster on Sept. 28, and that group was built without defenseman Maveric Lamoureux, whose injury is expected to keep him out long-term. The Mammoth opened their road schedule in Boston on Oct. 8.

The organizational pipeline runs through Tucson, and several Roadrunners attended Mammoth rookie camp in September, among them Owen Allard, Daniil But, Michael Hrabal and Artem Duda. But appeared in 29 games with Utah last season, recording three goals and four assists, and added 39 points in 41 AHL games. Hrabal signed a three-year entry-level contract in March and went 3-1-1 with a 2.96 goals-against average in five Tucson appearances after finishing his career at Massachusetts.

Buffalo Sabres News & Notes

Buffalo locked up a piece of its blue line before the season began, signing defenseman Louis Crevier to a four-year, $16 million extension on the eve of the opener. The timing mattered, because the group was already thinned out. Mattias Samuelsson was ruled week-to-week with a lower-body injury, and Olen Zellweger entered concussion protocol after both were hurt in their preseason debuts, leaving the Sabres weighing a recall for opening night.

The early schedule has brought mixed returns. Buffalo hosted Dallas on Oct. 8 and came away with an overtime win, though the night was tempered by an injury update on forward Josh Doan. Goaltending has drawn scrutiny as well, with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen’s rough start keeping both criticism and trade chatter alive. A handful of Sabres are already feeling the heat after slow individual starts, and the team is coming off a frustrating defeat.

Players To Watch

Clayton Keller — Utah Mammoth

Keller put four shots on net in his last outing and led Utah forwards with 19:41 of ice time, but he didn’t find the scoresheet. With Michael Carcone day-to-day, Keller’s workload isn’t shrinking. If you need a shots-on-goal play tonight, the volume and minutes are already there.

Rasmus Dahlin — Buffalo Sabres

Dahlin logged 26:24 last time out, more than any Sabre, though just one shot came of it. Box Score Junkie has him at a 62.9% Corsi-for and 62.1% Fenwick through 107 minutes this season, with 3.1 high-danger expected goals generated while he’s on the ice. The territorial tilt should follow him again.
