Jeremy Swayman made 14 saves on 15 shots in his fourth win of the season.
Pavel Zacha took the game’s first penalty. He was whistled for a trip on David Jiricek, sending the Flyers to the man advantage halfway through the first period. The Bruins made the penalty kill look easy and did not let the Flyers get a single shot on Swayman.
David Pastrnak, shortly after being denied on a chance in the slot, continued the push on offense. He dropped a pass to Zacha, who fired a shot on ex-Bruin Dan Vladar. Vladar poked his stick at the puck, and it bounced behind him and over the goal line to give the Bruins the lead 12 minutes into the game.
The goal marked Zacha’s first of the season.
The Bruins controlled play throughout the first 20 minutes. They outshot the Flyers 12-3 and held a 19-10 advantage in shot attempts at 5-on-5, per Natural Stat Trick.
There was not much action to start the second period, but the Bruins continued to control the game. The shots were still lopsided. The Flyers had just two shots on goal at the 14:24 mark of the period, and finished the period with five.
The Bruins broke out for a 4-on-2, and Fraser Minten played it to JJ Peterka on his left. Mason Lohrei trailed behind the three forwards, but Peterka dropped it to the 25-year-old defenseman, and he uncorked a shot to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead.
Lohrei now has two goals in two games, and he leads all Bruins defensemen in points (2-2–4) through six games. Peterka also recorded his 200th career NHL point with the assist.
The Bruins wasted no time to start the third period. Fraser Minten set up behind Vladar’s net and received the puck from Will Borgen. Minten played it to a crashing Marat Khusnutdinov, who beat Vladar on the blocker side to push the lead to three.
Porter Martone broke Swayman’s bid for a shutout at the 6:30 mark of the third period. He beat Swayman with a high shot on the power play to make it 3-1.
It did not take long for the Bruins to respond. The new-look third line, featuring Casey Mittelstadt, Elias Lindholm, and James Hagens, connected for the second game in a row. Hagens grabbed his rebound and played the puck to Lindholm, who found Mittelstadt parked outside of the crease. Mittelstadt’s second goal of the season extended the Bruins’ lead to 4-1.
Fraser Minten joined the party with four minutes to go. He got a feed from JJ Peterka and beat Vladar five-hole to extend the Bruins’ lead to 5-1.
The Bruins are set for a four-game road trip that starts on Tuesday night (11:00 PM) in San Jose. They will then travel to Anaheim, Los Angeles, and Dallas before returning home.
