Columbus Blue Jackets News & Notes
Columbus comes out of Saturday’s lopsided home loss to Utah with a clear list of repairs. Head coach Rick Bowness cancelled scheduled days off and put the team on the ice instead, after watching poor transition play, forwards out of position and turnovers that let the Mammoth dictate pace. The penalty kill allowed three of the four goals against, and third-period penalties in what had been a 2-1 game preceded the collapse. Better neutral-zone forechecking, cleaner passing and discipline were the stated focus.
The blue line gets reinforcement. Damon Severson, who had shoulder surgery in April after an injury late last March, was activated off the injured/non-roster list and is in line for his season debut against Pittsburgh, slightly ahead of his targeted return. He has practiced fully alongside Zach Werenski. Dante Fabbro and Ivan Provorov remain on injured reserve. Up front, Matthew Knies, acquired in the Kirill Marchenko trade with Toronto, became the first Blue Jacket to score twice in his debut.
St. Louis Blues News & Notes
St. Louis dropped its home opener 3-2 in overtime to San Jose on Thursday at Enterprise Center, with Darnell Nurse scoring just over a minute into the extra period. The Blues carried play early, outshooting the Sharks 11-3 in the first period behind Connor McMichael’s opening goal, his first with the club. Dillon Dube also scored, and Joel Hofer stopped 23 of 26 shots. Tyler Toffoli tied the game in the second after a killed Blues penalty.
Colton Parayko played his 804th NHL game Thursday, passing Barret Jackman for the most by a defenseman in franchise history and moving second overall behind Bernie Federko’s 927. The 2019 Stanley Cup winner has 314 career points and 1,567 blocked shots. Justin Barron made his Blues debut in place of Theo Lindstein. Alexey Toropchenko left the season opener in Dallas with a shoulder injury after a hit along the boards, and Dube is listed as doubtful for Saturday.

Players To Watch
Damon Severson — Columbus Blue Jackets
Severson was the driver from the back end last time out, posting a goal and an assist on three shots across 22:20 of ice time. With Werenski eating 29:36 ahead of him, Severson is getting the matchups and minutes to keep producing, and a defenseman points prop is worth a look tonight.
Brandon Carlo — St. Louis Blues
Carlo is the one Blue tilting the ice this year. Box Score Junkie has him at 53.2% Corsi-for with 56.9 shot attempts for per 60 and 2.0 high-danger expected goals generated across 70 minutes in 2026-27, comfortably the best possession profile on the roster. He won’t score much, but watch the territorial edge.
