Boston Bruins goaltending prospect and former University of Notre Dame goaltender Ryan Bischel announced his retirement from professional hockey on his Instagram page on June 3. Bischel signed with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League in April of 2024 after five stellar seasons at Notre Dame where the Medina, Minnesota native won 47 games and was a Hobey Baker nominee for top collegiate hockey player at the end of the 2023-24 season along with Big Ten Goaltender of the Year honors.
Bischel also played three seasons with the Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League, winning 49 games and a Clark Cup championship in 2017-18. The 25-year-old netminder went undrafted but continued to develop into a pro prospect before joining the Bruins organization.
Bischel never suited up for Providence but did play 28 games for the Maine Mariners, the Bruins’ ECHL affiliate. The 6-foot-1 goalie posted a 12-15-1 record with a 3.25 goals against average and an .885 save percentage.
