Montreal Canadiens assists ace Lane Hutson has been honoured as the Calder Trophy winner for the 2024-25 season, while Calgary Flames netminder Dustin Wolf finished second in voting for the NHL’s rookie of the year award.

Hutson, who matched Larry Murphy’s longstanding record for most helpers by a freshman blueliner, topped the ballot with 1,832 points. He received 165 first-place nods.

Wolf earned 1,169 points, including 15 top-of-the-heap mentions.

San Jose Sharks forward Macklin Celebrini rounded out the top three at 1,104 points.

Wolf, who recently turned 24, was a stalwart for the Flames in his first full season at the NHL level.

The rising-star puck-stopper notched 29 wins, one shy of Mike Vernon’s franchise record for most by a newbie netminder. He posted 2.64 goals-against average and .910 save percentage and was oh-so-close to backstopping an underdog squad to a playoff berth.

The Flames ultimately missed out due to a tiebreaker.

While Wolf settled for second in the Calder Trophy race, it’s still the highest result for a Flames rookie since 1996-97, when Jarome Iginla was runner-up to Bryan Berard.

“It’s a cool list to be a part of,” Wolf told Postmedia after he was announced as one of three finalists for the award. “This was a strong year for us young bucks.”

Hutson finished the season with 66 points, including 60 assists. He was just the fourth defenceman in the NHL’s modern era to lead the rookie scoring race.

On 191 ballots, submitted by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association, Hutson was never listed lower than second. The 21-year-old was surprised with the hardware during a dinner with his extended family in Lake Barrington, Ill.
