Winnipeg got a pair of goals from Mark Scheifele and Alex Iafallo, but Clay Stevenson made 34 saves as the Winnipeg Jets fell 3-2 to the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon.

Mark Jankowski extended his goal-scoring streak to six games, while Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Nikolaj Ehlers picked up the other goals for the Hurricanes.

Carolina picked up their seventh straight win at Canada Life Centre, and the Jets were handed their second regulation loss of the season.

The first period remained scoreless, and the second frame seemed like it was going to go down a similar avenue.

Scheifele’s opening goal finished some nice stickhandling with a backhand that just beat Pyotr Kochetkov to make it 1-0. His goal pulled him within five goals of tying Dale Hawerchuk’s goal-scoring franchise record, and six of breaking the mark.

Not long after Scheifele’s goal, Carolina got on the power play and immediately executed as Jankowski picked up the loose puck and beat Stevenson top shelf to tie the game 1-1.

Following a hit on Mario Ferraro, Winnipeg didn’t get the power play, but they answered as if they certainly were on the power play. A nice rush by Adam Lowry’s line led to Lowry getting himself into the corner, and some bad positioning by Kochetkov left the net unattended, allowing Iafallo to make it a 2-1 game.

Winnipeg’s second lead of the game was short-lived.

Just when it seemed like Winnipeg was going to make it out of the second period with a lead, Carolina’s relentless offence found a way to tie the game. Kotkaniemi tipped in a shot from Shayne Gostisbehere to make it 2-2, and Winnipeg needed an answer if they wanted to keep themselves in the game.

Jets captain Adam Lowry said in the post-game, “They’re defending Stanley Cup champions for a reason — they stick to their game.”

Carolina stuck to their game in the third period and locked down any push that Winnipeg gave them.

Ultimately, a hard slapshot from Nikolaj Ehlers beat Stevenson to make it 3-2, and Carolina didn’t give up on that lead for the remainder of the game.

Kochetkov made 21 saves in Carolina’s victory, while Gostisbehere recorded two assists for Carolina’s only multi-point player of the game.
