The Boston Bruins went 3-for-3 in California, and now they’ve won their last five.
They beat Marco Sturm’s old club, the Los Angeles Kings, with the help of four unanswered goals. The Bruins swept the back-to-back in Southern California, but both games looked similar. The Bruins went down early, adjusted, and found their game in the final 20 minutes. The third-period success is not exclusive to the last two nights, either.
Pavel Zacha also did not play last night. He is day-to-day with an upper-body injury.
Elsewhere around the league, Elliotte Friedman dropped news that Connor Hellebuyck is set to return this coming week. He wanted to return ahead of the Jets’ season opener, but the CBA gave the Jets some control over his return. Friedman also revealed two teams that are interested in making an early-season trade, including the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Flyers did it. They won a hockey game. They also had some off-ice help that played a major role.
History was made in South Florida. An ex-Bruin got into a solid bout, and Cole Caufield showed why his nickname is Mr. Saturday Night.
Happy Sunday, catch up on Bruins and league news in today’s Daily Bean:
Boston Bruins
BRUINS WIN: Five in a row. The Bruins (7-2-0) beat the Los Angeles Kings (0-4-2) 4-1 last night and completed the sweep of the California slate. David Pastrnak (4), Marat Khusnutdinov (2), Elias Lindholm (3), and JJ Peterka (3) scored, while Jeremy Swayman stopped 25 of 26 shots for his sixth win of the season.
POSTGAME: The five-game win streak has not come easy for the black and gold. Another slow start last night forced Marco Sturm to make more changes, including a third-period line shuffle that ultimately helped produce the game-winning goal.
The Bruins also lead the NHL in third-period goals (16), and their plus-11 goal differential in the final 20 minutes is the best in the league.
ZACHA: The Bruins received some unfortunate news ahead of the game. Pavel Zacha, who did not play in the last nine minutes of the Bruins’ win on Friday, is day-to-day with an upper-body injury.
NEXT UP: Day off for the Bruins today. They will practice tomorrow at 2:30 PM ET (1:30 PM CT) at American Airlines Center in Dallas.

NHL News & National Hockey Now
Sportsnet: Connor Hellebuyck’s suspension ends on Friday, according to Elliotte Friedman. He informed the Jets that he wanted to return ahead of their 4-3 overtime loss to the Bruins, but with the CBA, the Jets had authority to further suspend the 33-year-old goaltender.
Sportsnet (video): Here are the Saturday Headlines, including more on the Hellebuyck situation. Elliotte Friedman also throws out two teams that are interested in making trades this early in the season.
TSN: Jets captain Adam Lowry said that “conversations” are in store once Hellebuyck returns. Head coach Scott Arniel didn’t want to talk about it, saying, “I really don’t care right now on that scenario.”
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: One of those teams is the Penguins. Kyle Dubas is willing to trade veterans in order to open spots for the younger players currently in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Dan Kingerski has more on the Penguins’ front, including which veterans could draw the largest returns for Dubas.
Philly Hockey Now: The Flyers won! But the story goes beyond the ice. Jason Myrtetus, a Flyers broadcaster battling stage 4 cancer, delivered an emotional speech ahead of their game. After the game, Sean Couturier handed the new “Rocky Gloves” to Myrtetus. Will James has a pretty good postgame story from Philadelphia.
HockeyFights.com (video via YouTube): Hey, Trent Frederic. The ex-Bruin dropped the gloves with Utah’s Jack McBain last night and landed a few heavy punches.
Florida Hockey Now: History was made in Sunrise, Florida, last night. Carter Verhaeghe had a natural hat trick. Brady Tkachuk recorded natural hat tricks in the previous two games. The Panthers are the first team in NHL history to have a player record a natural hat trick in three straight games.
Montreal Hockey Now: Mr. Saturday Night — a great song by Jon Pardi. The name also applies to Cole Caufield, and he scored the overtime winner in Montreal’s 4-3 win over Buffalo last night. Marc Dumont has the highlights from the Atlantic Division matchup and rematch from Round 2 of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
