Lucas Raymond’s shootout goal to win the Red Wings final game of their early season home stand counted in all the ways that matter. It will not, however, be counted on the stat sheet, where he still stands at a grand total of zero goals this year.
The Detroit Red Wings concluded their seven game early-October residence at Little Caesars Arena with a win over the San Jose Sharks, bringing their record to 3-3-2 on the year thanks to Raymond’s (mostly) unrecorded heroics after a late game comeback that saw Alex DeBrincat tie things up with less than two minutes left.
For now, the Red Wings must look to the future with a four game west coast road trip playing against the Seattle Kraken, Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, and Edmonton Oilers- in that order.
Detroit will be hoping to build on their first back to back wins of the season, along with their first win when scoring the first goal of the game. However, Detroit’s lead-building skills are still definitely a work in progress, with the next three goals of the game having been scored by Macklin Celebrini and the rest of the Sharks squad.
Led by their second line of DeBrincat, Emmitt Finnie, and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, however, the Red Wings were able to force things into overtime, and eventually the shootout. Finnie’s continue ascent as the team’s second line center with two points in two of the Red Wings last three games has certainly helped to alleviate some of the pressure caused by the top line’s continued scoring drought.
The Red Wings will certainly be relying heavily on the young center with Marco Kasper still out week-to-week. The rest of the team’s centers (including Kasper) are not exactly being known for their offensive prowess, aside from Dylan Larkin.
In Case You Missed It:
The Red Wings are still working things out, but at least they’ve ticked some boxes to start the season.
Jacob Bernard-Docker was placed on waivers yesterday.
Several past and current Red Wings 40-goal scorers had big weekends.
Red Wings Extra
Red Wings prospect Jesse Kiiskinen is learning the ropes in his first season of American professional hockey. The former Nashville Predators third round pick made the full-time jump to North America this year and has so far put up 5 goals and 2 assists in 7 games.
The young Finnish wingers physicality has certainly popped on screen, as well as his scoring touch, especially over the weekend when he dropped the gloves with Chicago Blackhawks prospect Jake Furlong in the AHL. Kiiskinen will likely spend the year with the Grand Rapids Griffins, but with the Red Wings bottom six in desperate need of offense, Detroit may just give him a couple looks later in the season.
