In this week’s NHL rumors rundown, the Columbus Blue Jackets could be facing significant changes, with questions surrounding their head coach and Zach Werenski‘s long-term future. Meanwhile, Buffalo Sabres GM Jarmo Kekalainen has addressed speculation involving Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, although a trade might not be completely off the table. The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly willing to pay a premium for a difference-making defenseman, but Easton Cowan appears to be off-limits. Finally, the Nashville Predators could be preparing for a more substantial roster overhaul as management looks beyond simply making the playoffs.

Blue Jackets Could Face Coaching Change and Werenski Decision

According to Frank Seravalli and Elliotte Friedman, the Columbus Blue Jackets could be approaching some significant organizational decisions.

Seravalli suggested it wouldn’t surprise him if Columbus made a coaching change within the next 20 games. Rick Bowness continues to call out his players, and the message is growing tired. He also believes uncertainty surrounds Zach Werenski’s future.

Seravalli suggested Werenski is satisfied for now, but the Blue Jackets will eventually need to approach him about a contract extension next summer. Meanwhile, Elliotte Friedman says everyone is wondering if the Werenski watch will start up again. “But I think it’s premature for that.”

If Werenski isn’t interested in committing long-term, Columbus will have to seriously consider its options.

Sabres GM Addresses Luukkonen Trade Rumors

Buffalo Sabres GM Jarmo Kekalainen addressed speculation surrounding Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen during a Tuesday morning appearance on WGR 550 AM. “We believe in our goaltending…Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is a really good goaltender who has a lot to give to the Buffalo Sabres and will be a big part of our future,” Kekalainen said.

While that’s a strong endorsement, it doesn’t necessarily eliminate the possibility of a trade.

The Buffalo Sabres have been linked in trade talks for Connor Hellebuyck. However, Stuart Skinner and Clay Stevenson’s strong early-season performances could make acquiring another goaltender less important for the Jets.

That potentially leaves the New York Rangers as another option following Igor Shesterkin’s season-ending injury.

For now, Kekalainen’s comments suggest Buffalo isn’t actively looking to move Luukkonen, although circumstances could change.

Maple Leafs Willing to Pay Premium for Defenseman, But Not Cowan

According to Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts, Toronto Maple Leafs executive John Chayka has informed several general managers that the organization is prepared to surrender a premium asset for a legitimate difference-making defenseman. However, Toronto reportedly has little interest in trading Easton Cowan.

Friedman explained that the Maple Leafs believe Cowan has developed considerably and view him as an important piece of their future. If they choose to hang onto Cowan, potential trade assets could instead include Toronto’s first-round pick acquired from Colorado and several prospects currently outside the NHL.

Luke Fox also suggested Toronto shouldn’t consider moving Cowan unless the return involves someone of Zach Werenski’s caliber or a legitimate No. 1 defenseman.

Predators Looking Beyond Simply Making the Playoffs

The Nashville Predators could be heading toward significant roster changes as GM Chris MacFarland wants to turn the team into more than a bubble playoff club. Speaking on Melnick in the Afternoon, Pierre LeBrun suggested Nashville’s current roster is, a work in progress.

According to LeBrun, the GM’s mandate is to build a team that can take repeated swings at contention rather than simply fighting for a playoff spot every season. Instead of making short-term additions to chase a wild-card position, the Predators could prioritize moves that improve the team long term.
