Detroit Red Wings News & Notes

Detroit’s goaltending picture shifted again Thursday in Vancouver. John Gibson did not return after the second period, reportedly due to something in his eye, and Michal Postava entered for his NHL debut in the third, stopping seven of eight shots in a 5-2 Red Wings win. Postava had been recalled from Grand Rapids earlier in the week after Daniil Tarasov tweaked something, with Griffins coach Dan Watson confirming the move. Postava is 4-0-0 with a 1.25 goals-against average and a .954 save percentage in the AHL.

Gibson entered the week as Detroit’s starter, going 2-3-1 with a 3.58 goals-against average and an .873 save percentage. Tarasov, signed after the Red Wings traded Sebastian Cossa, had appeared in three games and started two, posting a 0.79 goals-against average, a .965 save percentage and a shutout. Both goaltenders are unrestricted free agents after this season. Prospect Trey Augustine, drafted 41st overall in 2023, picked up his first professional win with Grand Rapids on Oct. 17, stopping 27 of 29 shots.

Calgary Flames News & Notes

Calgary came out of its most recent outing with a 2-1 win over the Wild on October 22, a game the Flames played without their captain. Goaltender Devin Cooley carried the bulk of the workload, stopping 36 shots to preserve the one-goal margin. The result arrived during a stretch in which Calgary’s scoring has drawn scrutiny, with the club’s goal-production shortage prompting discussion about which forwards in the organization might be summoned to help.

The roster has been in flux. Calgary placed forward Sam Honzek on injured reserve and recalled Ben Jones from AHL Stockton affiliate Wranglers, one of several moves that have reshuffled the line combinations in recent weeks. Rookie forward Matt Castagna has been working through his first month of NHL hockey. Elsewhere, speculation has linked defenceman Zach Whitecloud to Toronto, while commentary around the club has centred on whether the Flames continue leaning on their younger players.

Players To Watch

Lucas Raymond — Detroit Red Wings

Raymond is coming off a 2G 1A, five-shot night in 17:42 of ice time, and the underlying work backs it up. Box Score Junkie has him at 63.9% Corsi-for and 64.8% Fenwick this season, with 79.4 shot attempts for per 60 and 5.4 high-danger xG generated — the best drive on Detroit’s roster.

Matt Coronato — Calgary Flames

Coronato logged 17:18 with an assist and three shots last time out, a solid night of volume. Box Score Junkie credits him with 53.4% Corsi-for and 71.2 shot attempts for per 60 this season, Calgary’s strongest forward possession line. With two goals on 1.9 expected, he’s scoring at a sustainable clip — a reasonable shots-on-goal play.
