Signs are pointing to the Philadelphia Flyers getting healthier.
Ahead of Saturday’s matchup against the Anaheim Ducks, the team waived veteran forward Garrett Wilson, who had signed an NHL contract at the beginning of the season after initially only signing an AHL deal. Wilson made the NHL roster out of training camp, but only appeared in two games for the Flyers.
That move freed up a roster spot for the team to activate defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen from injured reserve, who had missed the previous 9 games before skating in a heavier-usage “3rd pair” role on Saturday.
That was the first of the returns for the Flyers, who remain without defenseman Cam York, as well as forwards Travis Konecny and Owen Tippett. At least for now.
On Sunday morning, the Flyers made another roster move, loaning center Jacob Gaucher back to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Gaucher was called up shortly after the team had recalled forwards Alex Bump, Cole Knuble, and defenseman Hunter McDonald. Without Tyson Foerster, whose absence was brief, they needed another forward.
Gaucher played in 3 games, but this stint has come to an end.
Now, the team’s active roster sits at 22 players, which gives the team the ability to activate one of their players off injured reserve.
With David Jiricek and Simon Benoit already in the press box, loaning Gaucher indicates that it’ll likely be a forward, taking Cam York off the table. York has been practicing, so he may be close. However, if they activate him, the Flyers would have 12 forwards and 9 defensemen, which does not quite make sense.
That leaves Travis Konecny or Owen Tippett.
Both players were listed as day-to-day before eventually being placed on injured reserve. Konecny has missed the last 8 games for the Flyers. Tippett has been out for 4. The two forwards both play big roles when healthy.
Young players like Cole Knuble and even Alex Bump have stepped up in their absence. However, the team will be happy to get Tippett and Konecny back.
News surrounding their status has been quiet. Neither player has been seen at practice or morning skate since being placed on IR. If I had to lean towards either being activated soon, my gut says Tippett, given the fact that it took until a roster spot was needed before placing him on IR.
However, a clearer answer will likely come from Monday’s practice at the Flyers Training Center in Voorhees, New Jersey.
Will Owen Tippett or Travis Konecny make their return on Tuesday when the Flyers host the Columbus Blue Jackets?
