The Washington Capitals went shopping on the waiver wire today. They came away with a defenseman from a club that took one of their players the same way earlier. The Capitals have claimed Jack St. Ivany off waivers from the Winnipeg Jets.

The claim ends a short and hectic stay in Winnipeg. On Friday, the Jets made several roster moves at once. They placed forward Vladislav Namestnikov on injured reserve. They also assigned Brayden Yager. St. Ivany was the third piece, going on waivers that same day.

Those moves followed a much bigger one. Winnipeg traded goaltender Connor Hellebuyck to the New Jersey Devils.

Jack St. Ivany Heads to Washington

St. Ivany wasn’t alone on the wire. Daily Faceoff’s Oct. 23 waiver list had two names on it. One was St. Ivany. The other was Minnesota Wild defenseman Daemon Hunt. Neither player made it through. The Nashville Predators claimed Hunt while Washington grabbed St. Ivany.

There’s a bit of history between these two clubs on the wire. The Jets had previously claimed a goaltender off waivers from the Capitals. Now Washington has returned the favor.

St. Ivany is 27 years old. He’s listed as John St. Ivany on NHL.com, but he goes by Jack. He’s a former Penguin. Winnipeg acquired him from Pittsburgh in a trade that sent forward David Gustafsson the other way.

What’s Next

Washington now has to find a spot for him on the roster. The Capitals haven’t said when he’ll join the team or make his debut. It’ll be interesting to see where St. Ivany slots in on the Washington blue line and how quickly he gets into the lineup.
