Jon Cooper has made one thing clear: Nikita Kucherov is fully committed to the Tampa Bay Lightning this season, even with the Montreal Canadiens reportedly topping his preferred destinations.
As far as Cooper is concerned, nothing has changed. Kucherov wants to be there, he’s committed to his teammates, and the locker room remains focused on the same goal.
The Lightning head coach also wants to end speculation surrounding every frustrated reaction from his superstar.
If Kucherov turns the puck over, gets upset after a broken play, or exchanges words behind the bench, Cooper doesn’t want people assuming he’s looking for a way out.
And his production hasn’t suffered. Number 86 has 15 points through 12 games, including one goal and four assists on the power play.
With 1,139 points in 891 career games, Kucherov has earned the freedom to play with emotion. Cooper knows what he’s getting from a superstar who’s played that way for nearly 15 years.
The Canadiens remain in the Nikita Kucherov conversation
For Montreal, Cooper’s comments don’t necessarily change anything. David Pagnotta has reported that the Canadiens top Kucherov’s preferred destinations, and Cooper hasn’t ruled out what happens down the road.
The financial side is another story. According to Chris Johnston, Kucherov could seek a six-year contract worth $20 million annually. That’s a massive commitment.
His current deal carries a $9.5 million cap hit through 2026-27. Without an extension, Kucherov could become an unrestricted free agent, making Cooper’s comments about his future interesting.
Tampa Bay has little reason to let speculation take over. The Lightning are 8-3-1, sit 10th in the NHL standings, and remain unbeaten at home through six games.
Cooper isn’t trying to predict Kucherov’s future. He’s drawing a line between his star’s commitment this season and the decision he’ll eventually have the right to make.
Gabby Shirley shared Cooper’s comments on X, including his message about Kucherov’s commitment and future.
Cooper stressed that Kucherov remains committed to a group that loves him. He also acknowledged that Kucherov has earned the right to decide his future when the time comes.
For now, Kucherov remains focused on Tampa Bay, and the Canadiens can stay interested without anything happening immediately.
