The NHL Combine took place this past weekend and reports emerged that the New York Rangers used unusual tactics during their interview process with several prospects.
The Rangers organization is currently evaluating whether to give up their 2025 first round pick through their trade with the Vancouver Canucks and JT Miller or defer it to 2026.
Rangers were unique in their interview process
«Multiple prospects confirmed that they played a game during an interview,» Mark Scheig of The Hockey Writers wrote via X. «They were presented a 10 X 10 board of numbers, randomly placed 1-100. They were asked to find 3 different numbers on that random board as quickly as possible. The team? The New York Rangers.» – Mark Scheig
It’s likely this game is to show the Rangers whether these prospects have quick decision skills along with good visual acuity while looking at their agility with their hands an eye coordination.
In this draft, the Rangers have 9 draft choices to work with, and it remains to be seen on what the Rangers will do with these picks as the appetite for change continues to run rampant around the organization.
Despite being a considered weaker draft, it’s likely the Rangers will use most of their picks to help restock their cupboards as the team’s prospect pool is beginning to diminish as several prospects are now emerging as NHL players including Brennan Othmann , Gabe Perreault, Will Cuylle and Zac Jones.
Rangers will be one of the busiest teams in the NHL this offseason
General manager Chris Drury along with his management team will be quite busy this summer as the team is looking to make major changes within their lineup and their style of play.
The Rangers have begun their changes when they fired former head coach Peter Laviolette and hired former Rangers assistant coach and Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan.
Rumors have been swirling around the team for the past couple of weeks and it appears that the team will be ready to make major deals throughout the summer months which will likely begin at the NHL draft which is set to begin on June 27th.
