The Dallas Stars are in desperation mode, trying to clear cap space, and Mason Marchment could fall victim.

Dallas has already made headlines with rumors swirling that they could trade Jason Robertson for cap relief. However, they may look to move other large contracts before trading their 25-year-old star. That would put Marchment, the 29-year-old forward, on the outs in Dallas.

Mason Marchment, who primarily played the left wing in Dallas, is considered to be a hybrid forward. He can do it all; he can be a left wing, right wing, or center. His time in Dallas was spent on the wing, especially with the Stars’ depth at center. Marchment is better than a fourth-liner, so why put him there just to play a position?

This past season, Marchement tallied 22 goals and 25 assists for 47 points in 62 games. He was pacing for his best career season.

His 22 goals matched a career high from just a season prior, and his 25 assists were six shy of a career best. Marchment was scoring at a .75 point-per-game pace, which is the second-best of his career, and his best since the 2021-22 season.

The 6’5″ forward plays with tons of physicality and could bring a strong presence in front of the net. He is not afraid to stand up for his teammates and get scrappy with the opposition.

While inconsistent, Marchment can be a big scoring threat. His defense and discipline are significant weaknesses.

With the Stars looking to make a move, could the Flyers make sense as a landing spot for Marchment?

Could the Flyers Trade For Mason Marchment?

Yesterday, Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reported that the Stars are, in fact, taking calls on Robertson, but are hesitant to move him. They are, however, shopping Marchment, who is entering the final year of his $4.5 million AAV contract.

Anthony Di Marco of the Daily Faceoff then chimed in and reported that he knows Marchment is a player the Flyers like. That sparked his interest in whether the Flyers would pursue him, and it did mine as well.

Right off the bat, a move, to me anyway, would make sense.

Marchment is on an expiring contract. If you take a swing on him and miss, it’s over next year. If he works out, the Flyers will have plenty of chances to extend him before he hits the open market.

The Flyers desperately need to add some physicality to their top-nine, and Marchment would bring that, along with being a top-nine, maybe even top-six caliber offensive talent. If the Flyers are looking for size down the middle, they could transition Marchment back to center. After all, he is 6’5″; that sounds like size to me.

Also, it will not be a costly trade. At this point, it’s basically known that Marchment will be a cap dump trade of an expiring contract. It will not take too much to make the trade happen.

Let’s not forget the fact that the Flyers are not entering a year where a cup is expected out of them. While it is a big year for the direction of the rebuild, the expectations should not —and will not —be cup or bust. It’s the perfect time to take a risk on a player that has upside.
