There are a lot of moving pieces today, as the New York Rangers acquired prospect Carey Terrance in exchange for forward Chris Kreider. The deal was finalized on Thursday, as we waited in anticipation of what Drury would get in return for Kreider. Now get to know the newest Rangers prospect.

The New York Rangers traded Chris Kreider, the longest-tenured player in the organization today, for Carey Terrance. The deal involved the two swapping picks with each player.

But, for the Rangers, this could be seen as a cap dump, despite Kreider still being a serviceable top-nine forward in the lineup. He did score 30 points (22-8) this season after all.

With the acquisition of Terrance, the Rangers could hold onto the 12th overall pick or send it to Pittsburgh. For Terrance, he’ll add some depth in Hartford, as a 20-year-old 2nd-round pick (59th overall) in 2023.

The upstate New York product joins a thin group of center prospects in the Rangers organization, a pipeline that includes Noah Laba, Dylan Roobroeck and Bryce McConnell-Barker, each of whom spent time with Hartford of the American Hockey League this season.

The Rangers will now have more talent to choose from should they need a call-up in the AHL, should things go south in Madison Square Garden.

Terrance played for the Erie Otters in the OHL and has a sizable frame of 6’1″, 190 lbs. This year, he scored 20 goals and 39 points with the Otters and scored 2 goals in seven games with Team USA in the IIHF World Championships.

Terrance gets his chances two ways: Solo drives off the rush and give-and-goes. For the former, he dekes through opponents, burns them down the outside with speed and then skates through their hands to his way to the net. For the latter, he takes the middle and passes wide before turning on the afterburners, beating defenders to the net for the return feed. Even if the puck never arrives, he pushes back defenders to create lanes elsewhere.»

Terrance is known for his work ethic and his solid two-way play, which may have been a factor in Drury’s acquisition of him with the trade of Chris Kreider.

He’s capable of busting through the defense to create off and generate chances on the rush, and is efficient as he neither sacrifices offense nor defense to do so.

To give you an idea how why he sounds so mature as a player, his captain could end up being 1st overall pick in 2025, Matthew Schaefer.

«I think I’m a versatile player. I’m not just a guy who’s going to play on the power play or a man down but can play everywhere I think I’m going to come in and help in a few years and play a role. Wherever I’m needed. I’m going to bring excitement to the fans and like I am at home, be a great leader and role model in the community. I’m not just going to be on the ice but be a role model off the ice too.»

Terrance would go through adversity this season, after suffering an injury that hospitalized him and took him out of commission for two months. He’d later rejoin the Otters before the playoffs and would subsequently lose in the conference semifinals.

He’s already signed his ELC on April 9th and could turn pro next season, adding the depth needed in Hartford as the talent down the middle is looking pretty thin. He could end up as a potential third-line center in the NHL, but he’ll have to simmer in the AHL before he’s ready to be promoted.
