Carey Terrance goes to Rangers as part of this trade. Ducks will get a fourth round pick, Rangers get a third round pick.

It’s the end of an era in New York for one of the Rangers’ best homegrown players. Chris Kreider will be an Anaheim Duck.
Kreider had the Ducks on his limited no-trade list, but decided to waive it so that GM Chris Drury could send him West. We’re talking about a 2009 first-round pick who will leave eighth in the franchise in games played, third in total goals, 10th in points and tied for first in power play goals. No matter what’s happening with this reported deal, let’s stop and tip the cap if you’re a Rangers fan (full disclosure: I am one).
Now, let’s go and, as we always do, let’s grade both sides of this emerging deal.
The details of the Rangers and Ducks Chris Kreider trade
RANGERS GET: C Carey Terrance, a third-round pick
DUCKS GET: F Chris Kreider, a fourth-round pick
Kreider is a franchise legend, but he didn’t look himself last season. Injuries piled up and he’s getting up there in age at 34 years old and A LOT of time spent in front of the net.
So with an expiring deal after the 2027 season and the Rangers in a cap crunch, it made some sense to deal him, even though there’s an emotional side of this deal.
Terrance, on paper, has some intrigue as a former second-round pick and highlights like these:
Maybe he develops into a third-line, two-way player, which isn’t anything to sneeze at. And the pick? Well, the Rangers dealt away some of those, so whatever round it’s in, it’s nice.
This grade might change once we see what the Rangers do with the freed-up money. But for now …
GRADE: B
You don’t need to be reminded that this is the same Ducks team that took on Jacob Trouba from the Rangers last season. So this deal feels similar to me: taking a seasoned vet who will help a young, rebuilding learn how to win. Will it work? The hope is by the time Kreider’s contract is up, he’ll have that effect. And heck, with Joel Quenneville behind the bench and an upgrade here, maybe they’re thinking there’s a bigger step forward to be made (I don’t see it).
That said, giving away a prospect isn’t a great look for a team that’s trying to stock up on them.
