The trade chatter involving Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson wasn’t fiction.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman confirmed on Friday’s “32 Thoughts” podcast that the Stars did seriously explore the market for their 25-year-old winger in the aftermath of another disappointing playoff exit.

“It’s been a wild week around Jason Robertson, and honestly, everything reported about him during that time was accurate,” Friedman said.
According to Friedman, frustration inside the Stars organization after their collapse against Edmonton pushed them to evaluate “major decisions,” including gauging the value of moving Robertson.
That interest was first reported by David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, who said Dallas had taken calls on Robertson, Mason Marchment, and Matt Dumba.
“Numerous reports have indicated star winger Jason Robertson is in play for the Stars, and TFP’s David Pagnotta has confirmed that teams have been inquiring about his potential availability and the Stars have been willing to listen,” TFP reported.

Multiple sources told Pagnotta the club would prefer to move Marchment, but Robertson had drawn “significant” interest.
Friedman added that while trade discussions were real, the odds of a Robertson deal actually happening are now slim.
“If Robertson was to be moved, it would’ve taken one of two things: either a great player coming back, or a package that helped them replenish what they gave up to acquire [Mikko] Rantanen—maybe top draft picks or a talented young player,” Friedman said.

The Stars seem to have chosen to play the wait game and see where things stand between the organization and the player regarding a possible long-term contract extension.

“So right now, it seems like everything is on hold until there’s clarity on his long-term future in Dallas,” Friedman said.
Robertson only has one year left in his current contract and is coming off another strong campaign with 35 goals and 80 points.
With under $5 million in cap space and multiple contracts expiring next summer, Dallas could still face the reality of needing to trade Robertson.
