Columbus, Ohio (WSYX) — Columbus Blue Jackets defensemen Zach Werenski and Denton Mateychuk have been honored with selections to the NHL’s postseason All-Star teams, the club and league announced. Werenski was named to the NHL’s First All-Star Team, while Mateychuk earned a spot on the NHL’s All-Rookie Team. The Professional Hockey Writers Association conducted the voting at the end of the regular season.
Werenski, 27, becomes the second skater and fourth player in Blue Jackets history to be named to an All-Star Team. He joins the ranks of goaltender Steve Mason, goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, and defenseman Seth Jones. Werenski set franchise records for defensemen with 23 goals and 59 assists, totaling 82 points in the 2024-25 season. He led the NHL in total ice time and average ice time, finishing second in voting for the James Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman.
Mateychuk, 20, is the fourth skater and sixth player in franchise history to be named to the NHL’s All-Rookie Team. He concluded the 2024-25 season with 13 points in 45 appearances, ranking second among league rookie blueliners in even strength points. Mateychuk made his NHL debut on December 23 and scored his first career NHL goal on January 9. He was selected by Columbus in the first round of the 2022 NHL Draft.
