Rudy Guimond had so much success in his first junior season he’s decided to stick around.

Guimond, one of several Detroit Red Wings goaltending prospects, will remain with Moncton of the Quebec Martimes Junior Hockey League, rescinding his commitment to Yale.

Guimond, 20, set a CHL record by winning the first 24 games of his junior career this past season. He went 16–0 with a 1.73 goals-against average, .940 save percentage and three shutouts during the regular season. He went 8-1 in the playoffs, helping the Wildcats win the QMJHL Championship and earn a spot in the Memorial Cup.

“We are thrilled Rudy has chosen to return to Moncton,” Wildcats general manager Taylor MacDougall said on the team’s web site. “He was an integral part of our group’s success last season and now he has the opportunity to establish himself as one of the most impactful goaltenders in the CHL. Rudy has showcased elite composure and consistency. His decision to return to Moncton speaks to his trust in the process and desire to continue to improve under our goaltending coach, Antoine Samuel.”

The Red Wings selected Guimond in the sixth round in 2023 (169th overall).

“I’ve always believed in long-term development and that I have lots of room for improvement in getting ready for the next stage of my career,” Guimond said on the team’s web site. “I’m just getting started! I can’t wait to be back in the Avenir Centre for another season!”

The Red Wings must decide by next June whether to sign Guimond. Had he gone to college they would have had up to four years to decide whether to sign him.

Detroit’s goaltending prospect pool includes former first-round pick Sebastian Cossa, who’s expected to be joined in Grand Rapids by Michal Postava, signed last week to a two-year contract.

They also have Carter Gylander, who’s playing for ECHL Toledo, in the pro ranks and amateurs Trey Augustine (Michigan State) and Landon Miller (Sault Ste. Marie).
