A former first round pick has been suggested as a potential replacement for Brock Boeser, as the 28-year-old will be hitting the open market in a little over a week. The busiest time of the National Hockey League’s calendar is upon us and we’ve already seen quite a few trades over the last ten days and even some signings, including three-time Stanley Cup champion Jonathan Toews, who inked a one-year deal with the Winnipeg Jets after a two-year absence for health related issues. The Vancouver Canucks haven’t got in on the action just yet, but the expectation is they will over the next couple of weeks as President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford is hoping they’ll be aggressive to land the pieces they need to succeed, including a top-six winger to replace Brock Boeser.

Former first round pick emerges as replacement for Brock Boeser

In just over a week, the Vancouver Canucks and their fans will officially be saying goodbye to forward Brock Boeser as he’s set to hit the free agent market on Canada Day and is considered a longshot to re-sign with the team, according to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period.

“Boeser, 28, is a ‘longshot’ to re-sign with the Canucks, one team source confirmed to me this week. He is prepared to move on to the next chapter of his career and will attract significant interest this summer, especially given the limited market.” Pagnotta said.

While Brock Boeser will undoubtedly find a home find a new home pretty quickly next Tuesday, it’s going to be tough for the Vancouver Canucks to bring in someone that’ll have the impact he did, not just production-wise, but also in the dressing room and in the community. In recent weeks, the Canucks have been linked to several players that could fill that hole in the top-six, including Teuvo Teravainen, Bryan Rust, among others, and recently, a new name has emerged as a potential target for Patrik Allvin. In an article on Canucks Army last week, Tyson Cole took a look at some players that the Vancouver Canucks could target via trade to replace Brock Boeser and one name he suggests is former first round pick Rickard Rakell, who is currently with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Cole believes that Rakell may be a realistic option for the Vancouver Canucks as the Swedish forward is being dangled as a trade chip by Penguins General Manager Kyle Dubas.

“This may be the most realistic option for multiple reasons.

First off, the Pittsburgh Penguins seem to be the only team aggressively selling this offseason, with Rakell being one of the main trade chips that GM Kyle Dubas has dangled out to teams.” Cole said.

Rakell, a native of Sundbyberg, Sweden, appeared in 81 games during the 2024-25 season with the Penguins where he put up a career-high 70 points (35 goals, 35 assists), along with 14 penalty minutes and was a minus-22.

The 32-year-old has three years remaining on his contract with an average annual value (AAV) of $5 million, which is quite fair given his offensive production this season and it would be easy for Vancouver to add that money to their cap, with Patrik Allvin having just over $12 million to work with this summer.
