ANAHEIM, Calif. – The offseason of change for the Anaheim Ducks took another big swing on Monday morning.
Anaheim traded dynamic forward Trevor Zegras to the Philadelphia Flyers for bottom-six forward Ryan Poehling, Columbus’ 2025 second-round pick and the Flyers’ 2026 fourth-round pick.
The deal ends a long saga of trade rumors for the 24-year-old Zegras, who burst into the NHL with back-to-back 60-point seasons and viral highlight reel plays but was beset by injuries the last two seasons and had his unbridled creativity stamped down to work on the finer details of his defensive and 200-foot games. Zegras accrued 12 goals and 20 assists for 32 points in 57 games this season.
“I want to thank Trevor for his contributions and efforts over the last six years,” Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek said. “While this was a difficult trade to make, we have and will continue to look at retooling our roster over the next couple of months, and this transaction is part of that process. We wish Trevor the best of luck with the Flyers.”
Poehling was third- and fourth-line forward for the Flyers who set career highs last season with 12 goals and 19 assists for 31 points in 68 games. With the 6-foot-2, 204-pound 26-year-old on the ice at five-on-five, the Flyers earned 46.33% of shot attempts and 50.17% of expected goals.
Poehling has one-year remaining on his contract at $1.9 million and will be an unrestricted free agent next summer. Zegras also had one year remaining at $5.75 million and was an arbitration-eligible restricted free agent next summer.
Anaheim now has 10 draft picks in the 2025 NHL Draft, which begins with the first two rounds on Friday at Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
Zegras was drafted ninth overall by the Ducks in 2019 and debuted late in the 2020-21 season after finishing up at Boston University. The 2021 World Juniors MVP provided a spark in his first 24 games, but he truly burst onto the NHL scene in his full rookie campaign in 2021-22.
Zegras’ creative knack saw him post a 23-goal, 61-point season that was elevated to viral heights with his lacrosse-style alley-oop play to Sonny Milano in December of that season and participating in the Breakaway Challenge of the NHL All-Star Skills Competition.
Zegras’ eye-popping highlights and upward trajectory landed him on the cover of EA Sports NHL23 ahead of another 23 goals and 60+ points in the 2022-23 season. Zegras led the Ducks in goals and in points.
However, Zegras struggled to get back to those levels in the next two seasons under head coach Greg Cronin, partially due to Cronin seeking more accountability in a full-ice game for Zegras and also due to lower-body injuries that set Zegras on the sidelines for significant amounts of time.
After missing the start of the 2023 training camp due to a contract dispute, Zegras eventually picked up a hip injury and missed 20 games. When he returned to the line-up, he still proved he was capable of hitting the highlight reel with another lacrosse-style Michigan goal, but he later broke his ankle and missed 10 weeks of play.
Zegras played in just 31 games with six goals and nine assists in 2023-24.
Last season, Zegras had another slow start with four goals and six assists in the first 24 games of the season before a non-contact knee injury required surgery to repair a torn meniscus, which put him out another six weeks.
In his final 31 games of the season upon his return, Zegras netted eight goals with 14 assists for season totals of 12 goals and 20 assists in 57 games.
