Nick Kypreos Floats Unexpected Trade Chip in Maple Leafs’ Offseason Plans originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
In the middle of ongoing speculation around Toronto Maple Leafs pending free-agent forwards Mitch Marner and John Tavares, NHL insider Nick Kypreos turned the spotlight elsewhere.

Speaking on the “Real Kyper & Bourne” podcast on Wednesday, Sportsnet’s Kypreos proposed goaltender Joseph Woll as a legitimate trade chip the Maple Leafs could use to address some roster needs.
Woll, 26, just wrapped up a season in which he posted 27 wins, a .909 save percentage and a 2.73 goals-against average in 42 regular-season games. The netminder is signed for two more years at a $3.67 million cap hit.
“I’ll throw you another name out there that I’m not thrilled about moving, but there might be some real value — that you can collect some assets — in Joseph Woll,” Kypreos said.
Kypreos’ comment came as the Sportsnet’s panel discussed the possibility of Toronto trading Brandon Carlo to address Toronto’s center depth.

The insider used the opportunity to highlight the Maple Leafs’ lack of “movable assets,” arguing that Woll — despite his upside — might be the more appealing piece.
“My whole point in all of this is, how many true assets do you have to go get help, even if it is a centerman?” Kypreos wondered. “What is out there that is of value that someone would want? And I look at the Leafs roster, and I’m like, ‘kind of slim pickings here.'”

Still, durability remains a concern when it comes to Woll, as injuries have interrupted multiple stretches of his career. That, on the other hand, could be enough to convince the Leafs to explore moving him while his trade value remains high.

As things stand, Toronto enters the offseason with $25.7 million in cap space but faces the possibility of losing as many as seven forwards and one defenseman to free agency if it doesn’t bring back any of its pending free agents.
