The New York Rangers have hired now-former Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan. The team made the announcement on their social media pages Friday morning. The news comes after Penguins’ General Manager Kyle Dubas announced Sullivan would be parting ways with the team on Monday.Sullivan, who spent nearly a decade with the Penguins, was the second longest-tenured coach in the NHL behind Tampa Bay’s Jon Cooper.He was expected to return for what would have been his 10th full season with Pittsburgh before Monday’s announcement. Rangers’ General Manager Chris Drury said Sullivan would become the team’s 38th head coach. “Given his numerous accomplishments throughout his coaching career – including two Stanley Cups and leading Team USA at the international level – Mike brings a championship-level presence behind the bench. I’ve gotten to know Mike very well over the years, including as teammates in the 1997 World Championships, when he coached me as a player in New York and through our shared time working together with USA Hockey. As we began this process and Mike became an available option for us to speak with, it was immediately clear that he was the best coach to lead our team.” Drury said. Sullivan was an assistant coach with the Rangers between 2009 to 2010 then 2012 to 2013. Sullivan was brought up to the Pittsburgh Penguins from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in December of 2015.From that point, Sullivan led the Penguins to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and 2017.The Penguins have failed to make the playoffs for the past three seasons, and the team has not won a playoff series since 2018.Sullivan had 409 wins with the Penguins, making him Pittsburgh’s all-time win leader and the 14th coach in the NHL to win 400 games with one team.The search for a head coach for the Penguins continues.
