ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Even in the summer, hockey in Alaska never stops.
As part of their “Kraken Week” festivities, the NHL’s Seattle Kraken partnered with Anchorage Hockey Academy to host a camp for youth hockey players at Dempsey-Anderson Ice Arena on Thursday.
It is the fourth straight year that the Kraken have made the trip to Alaska, having done so every offseason since their inception as a franchise in 2021.
Players ages 7-16 got a chance to learn from Kraken youth coaches, as well as those from Anchorage Hockey Academy, and sharpen their skills with drills on and off the ice. Thirteen of the attendees even received financial assistance from the Bristol Bay Native Corporation in order to make it.
“We want to develop their puck-handling, their skating … their awareness,” Kraken junior coach Brock Weitl said. “It’s just about having fun and trying to develop their skills.”
Also making appearances throughout the clinic were Kraken center John Hayden, and Buoy, Seattle’s “sea troll” mascot.
The Kraken’s stay in Anchorage comes to a close on Friday with a free community skate at the Ice Chalet in Anchorage, starting at 3 p.m.
