The 2024-25 NHL season ended last week, but the league begins looking to the future tonight with the 2025 NHL Draft.

The New York Islanders had a 3.5% chance of landing the first overall pick, and they did exactly that when the No. 13 ball. The Islanders will pick first overall tonight for the first time since 2009.

Who will they pick? Well, it seems the widespread expectation is that they’ll select Matthew Schaefer, who fought through two unimaginable tragedies on his path to the NHL Draft.
