The Detroit Red Wings have a a busy day on Friday, June 27, as the NHL stages the first round of the 2025 draft.
It’s always a busy few days around that annual event, as teams explore trades and try to re-sign those of their unrestricted free agents they want back before the market opens on July 1.
The Wings hold their first pick at 13th, and also have selections at 44, 75, 76, 119, 140, 172, 204 and 211. Rounds 2-7 are on June 28.
It’s a different setup this year, as the NHL decentralized the draft. That means that general managers and their hockey operations staff stay in their cities while the top-100 players or so gather at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
Follow along here as we track the biggest events of the day:
If the name doesn’t sound all that familiar, it’s because the 29-year-old Swedish reserve defenseman only played seven games in 2024-25. He spent most of the second half in Detroit after Jeff Petry suffered an injury in early January, though it was Albert Johansson who got into the lineup. Lagesson got a two-year extension.
The Montreal Canadiens, an Atlantic Division rival, strengthened their defense corps by acquiring Noah Dobson (the 12th overall pick in 2018) from the New York Islanders. The return includes both of Montreal’s 2025 first-round picks, at Nos. 16 and 17.
John Tavares took his name of the pending unrestricted free agent list by re-signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs for four years, $17.52 million. The 34-year-old forward had 74 points in 75 games, plus seven points in 13 playoff games this season.
