Detroit Red Wings’ Lucas Raymond on missing playoffs again

Detroit Red Wings’ Lucas Raymond, April 19, 2025 in Detroit.

The Detroit Red Wings selected left winger Carter Bear with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

Bear is an 18-year-old winger from Winnipeg, Manitoba, in Canada who scored 40 goals in his most recent season with the WHL’s Everett Silvertips, becoming one of six players in the juniors franchise’s history to reach that mark.

The winger suffered a partially-torn Achilles tendon in March and has been rehabbing since then, which could have scared some teams off from taking him in the first round.

Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman took the leap, however, banking on Bear developing his offensive abilities to an NHL level.

Along with the 40 goals, Bear had 42 assists for the Silvertips in the 2024-25 season, notching a team-high 82 points. He shoots left-handed and has spent some time at center in the past.

EliteProspects.com ranked Bear as the No. 8 prospect heading into the draft, though most other outlets had him between 10-20.

Carter Bear WHL stats

Bear played in 56 games with the Silvertips in the 2024-25 season, finishing with a plus-33 rating and registering a team-high 14 power-play goals. He was named to second-team All-WHL for the Western Conference in the 2024-25 season.

In total, he has 141 points (66 goals, 75 assists) in parts of three seasons with the Silvertips. He began his WHL career with 19 games played in the 2022-23 season.

Bear was named MVP of the Winnipeg Thrashers of the Manitoba-U18 hockey league over 31 games during the 2022-23 season.

Carter Bear Achilles tear

Despite partially tearing his Achilles tendon in March, Bear may be on the road to health sooner than expected.

According to prospect analyst Cam Robinson in May, Bear might return from injury in time for the World Junior Summer Showcase in July.
