After making two selections in the first round on June 27, the Columbus Blue Jackets entered the second day of the NHL draft with five picks.
With their first pick in the first round, 14th overall, the Blue Jackets selected defenseman Jackson Smith, who intends to play for Penn State, He is 6-feet-4, 199 pounds and mobile. Smith contributed 11 goals and 54 points in 68 games last season with the WHL’s Tri-City Americans. He was ranked 13th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting.
The pick was announced by Meredith Gaudreau, the widow of former Blue Jackets star Johnny Gaudreau. She announced the pick after drawing loud applause at both the draft headquarters in Los Angeles and from about 3,000 fans who attended the Blue Jackets’ watch party at Nationwide Arena.
With their second pick, 20th overall, the Jackets pulled a stunner by selecting Pyotr Andreyanov, a goalie from Krasnaya Armiya Moskova, the junior program of Russia’s CSKA Moscow system.
Andreyanov, ranked by NHL Central Scouting as the No.1 international goalie in the draft class, was selected six picks after the Blue Jackets took Smith. The Jackets’ remaining picks are in the fourth round (109th overall), fifth round (160th), sixth round (173rd) and seventh round (205th and 218th).

Sascha Boumedienne, whose father, Josef, worked 11 years for the Blue Jackets as a scout and assistant coach, was taken by the Winnipeg Jets with the No. 28 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. Sascha Boumedienne played for the Ohio AAA Blue Jackets and the USHL’s Youngstown Phantoms, where he honed his skills as a defenseman before landing at Boston University. According to the New York Times, Sascha Boumedienne attended Olentangy Liberty High School.
