The South Shore’s lengthy list of hockey standouts just gained another pro.
Norwell’s Teddy Mutryn was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the third round (95th overall) of the NHL Draft on Saturday. The 18-year-old center graduated from St. Sebastian’s in Needham this spring and is committed to play at Boston College.

“I was watching (the pick) on TV,” Mutryn said in his media availability with Sharks reporters. “Actually, we had two TV’s going and one was a little ahead of the other. I was in the room that was a little behind and everyone was going nuts. I didn’t see anything for like 30 seconds. It was a crazy experience.”
According to a team press release, Mutryn posted 30 points (17 goals, 13 assists) in 47 games for the Chicago Steel of the USHL this season, finishing fifth on the team in points and tied for second in goals.
Mutryn also played for Team USA at this year’s U-18 World Junior Championship. He scored one goal in seven games as the team won bronze at the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex in Texas in May.

According to the St. Sebastian’s X account, Mutryn is the 31st player in program history to be drafted to the pros, and the ninth since 2017. On the Sharks, he unites with 20-year-old center Will Smith, a fellow St. Sebastian’s alum who hails from Lexington and was picked fourth overall in the 2023 draft.

Last summer, the San Jose Sharks again plucked from the South Shore landscape, hiring Ryan Warsofsky, a 36-year-old Marshfield native, to be their head coach.
“There’s obviously some pride being from Boston, from Massachusetts. It’s exciting to show the world what we can do,” Mutryn said. “It’s a pretty cool thing to be drafted by an organization with a lot of people from the Boston area.”
The Sharks finished 20-50-12 this past season and were awarded the second overall selection in the draft.
