The Toronto Maple Leafs and Vegas Golden Knights are reportedly hard at work to try to facilitate a huge sign-and-trade for Mitch Marner.
On day two of the NHL Entry Draft, TSN’s Darren Dreger and Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman are both reporting that Mitch Marner may be on the verge of becoming a member of the Vegas Golden Knights as the Leafs and Golden Knights are attempting to facilitate what could be a sign-and-trade.
On Saturday, both Dreger and Friedman revealed that while original reports suggested that Marner could walk via free agency on July 1st, it’s looking increasingly possible that Marner does work with the Leafs to facilitate a sign-and-trade to ensure that the Leafs get some assets back for him on his way out. Friedman also listed Nicolas Roy among the pieces that would be headed back to Toronto in the deal, if it happens.
If this does indeed occur, Marner will positively influence his legacy in Toronto, which was looking pretty rough after the end of the Leafs’ disappointing playoff run.
Marner is reportedly looking for as much as $14M-$15M on the open market, if he does indeed head to July 1st without a deal. Of course, a sign-and-trade would ensure that Marner would never reach free agency.
