The Toronto Maple Leafs and Vegas Golden Knights continue to work on a potential sign-and-trade involving Mitch Marner, and the Leafs’ desired return has now come into sharper focus.

According to NHL insider Bruce Garrioch, quoting league executives, Toronto has asked for both Nicolas Roy and Nicolas Hague as part of the proposed deal.
“There is talk amongst league executives that Leafs have asked for Nicolas Roy and Nicolas Hague in return,” Garrioch reported on X. “It will be interesting to see if this happens.”
Roy, 28, posted 31 points in 71 games this season and won a Stanley Cup with Vegas in 2023. Hague, a 26-year-old pending restricted free agent, scored 12 points in 68 games this season and would bolster Toronto’s blue line.
Marner, who had a career-best 102-point season with the Leafs and sits fifth on Toronto’s all-time scoring list, is set to hit free agency on July 1.
General manager Brad Treliving confirmed earlier this week that the Leafs anticipate Marner will test the open market, barring an unexpected plot twist.

“Unless there is significant change here, I would anticipate he’s going to hit the market,” Treliving said.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman first broke news of the ongoing sign-and-trade negotiations between Maple Leafs and Golden Knights on Saturday.
“On-and-off this week, Toronto and Vegas have been discussing the possibility of a sign-and-trade involving Mitch Marner,” he tweeted Saturday.

TSN’s Darren Dreger added a further update later, saying that there’s been no trade call with the league nor a contract signed by Marner prior to his move to Vegas.
“No trade call, nothing signed. More work ahead in terms of the potential of Mitch Marner being traded to Vegas and what the return might be,” Dreger said. “I don’t expect anything will get done (Saturday night).”

Vegas, which only has $5.6 million in current cap space, would need to create some room to land Marner’s projected $13–14 million cap hit before completing any deal.
