The 26-year-old Spokane native agreed to a one-year, two-way contract with the Mammoth worth $775,000 at the NHL level. A two-way deal allows Utah to assign Yamamoto to the AHL without renegotiating his contract. He will earn a higher salary when playing in the NHL and a lower salary when playing for the Tucson Roadrunners.

Last season, Yamamoto appeared in 12 games with Utah, recording three points on two goals and one assist. He spent most of the season in Tucson, playing in 54 games with 20 goals, 36 assists and 41 penalty minutes.

In the 2023–24 season, Yamamoto played for the Seattle Kraken, tallying 16 points in 59 games. After the season, the Kraken chose not to extend a qualifying offer to the pending restricted free agent, and he was picked up by Utah.

Yamamoto was selected No. 22 overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2017 NHL Draft. He played six seasons with Edmonton, appearing in 244 games and totaling 117 points.

He starred for his hometown Spokane Chiefs from 2014 to 2018. Yamamoto finished his WHL career tied for fifth all-time in franchise assists with 186 and ranks 16th in goals with 105. He remains sixth in Chiefs history in career points with 291.

In February, Yamamoto was inducted into the Chiefs Legends list.
