Although the off-season has just begun, Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev is already going above and beyond to prepare for the 2025-26 campaign.
One of the best off-season acquisitions from last year’s free agent window was defenseman Chris Tanev.
The Toronto Maple Leafs traded for Tanev’s rights at last year’s draft before signing him to a 6-year deal worth $4.5 million per season, and even at the age of 35, he produced another defensive gem of a season.
With 3 goals and 18 points in 79 games, Tanev was also a plus-31, took only 24 PIMs, and blocked 189 shots while averaging 19:45 TOI. He played a pivotal role on the penalty kill as well, seeing 184.8 minutes while shorthanded
Those numbers remained relatively the same during the playoffs after he added a goal and 2 assists, was plus-3, and blocked 38 shots while seeing 19:32 TOI per game.
It was assuredly a tough blow for all involved, having been ousted by the Florida Panthers in 7 games, which might explain why Tanev was seen at the team’s development camp on day one, showing up ready to work with some of the younger players. The veteran was joined by other regulars and past veterans helping out the Maple Leafs youth.
Defensive prospects like former first round pick Ben Danford, NCAA standout John Prokop, and undrafted invitee Owen Conrad were among those present at the development camp and getting a hand from Tanev, Mark Giordano and Jake Muzzin.
