FRISCO, TEXAS — The Mathew Dumba era in Dallas is over before it ever fully got going.
The Dallas Stars traded the 29-year-old defenseman to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday, along with a 2028 second-round pick, in exchange for 24-year-old Vladislav Kolyachonok. The move signals a shift toward youth on the blue line for Dallas, just months after signing Dumba in free agency.
Dumba appeared in just one season with the Stars after spending a decade with the Minnesota Wild. Known for his physical play and booming shot, the veteran logged key minutes but never quite found his rhythm in Dallas’ system.
Now, he heads to Pittsburgh looking for a fresh start, while the Stars get younger with Kolyachonok — a 2019 second-round pick who skated in 35 games last season between the Penguins and Utah.
For Dallas, it’s a move about the long game — shedding a veteran presence to develop a potential future asset.
