A former first round pick could be the Vancouver Canucks’ solution for their lack of depth down the middle as General Manager Patrik Allvin continues his search for a true 2C.

The Vancouver Canucks’ search for a second line centerman will continue throughout the summer after Patrik Allvin missed out on two key free agents on July 1st including Christian Dvorak, who inked a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Flyers to reunite with his old Arizona Coyotes Head Coach, Rick Tocchet. While there’s a very good chance the Vancouver Canucks will open the 2025-26 season with Elias Pettersson and Filip Chytil as their first & second line centermen, respectively, there’s still a possibilty that the club could make an addition between now and their first game in October and at this point, it’ll have to come through trade, if they want to bring in someone who will make an impact.

Former first round pick mentioned as potential fit for Vancouver Canucks

In a recent article on Canucks Army, Stephan Roget examined some potential players that Patrik Allvin could target through trade this summer and there were some intriguing options to consider.

One of the names that Roget took a look at was Anaheim Ducks forward Ryan Strome, a former fifth overall pick that has 12 years of experience at the National Hockey League level, including five seasons of 15+ goals.

Roget believes that while the Ducks don’t necessarily have to move him, Ryan Strome could be expendable this summer due to the team’s logjam at forward and will most likely be relegated to a third line role again starting in the fall.

“If we go back to the slight forward logjam in Anaheim, then Strome is certainly another centre who could shake loose, especially if the Ducks do wind up keeping McTavish. He’s been a fairly consistent 40-point scorer for a while now and has developed into a bit of a veteran leader.” Roget said.

The leadership aspect alone would make Ryan Strome a very attractive option for the Vancouver Canucks, if the Anaheim Ducks are willing to part with him this summer and he can contribute offensively too, potentially more than he has in recent years if, hypothetically, he was acquired and used in a top-six role by Adam Foote.

The Mississauga, Ontario native has two years remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $5 million US, which would be easy to add if Patrik Allvin moved some money out in the same deal, perhaps someone like Dakota Joshua or Teddy Blueger.
